Annual report on Schools of Public Health demographics

For those of you interested in applying to any of the accredited schools of public health (SPH), the ASPH (Association of Schools of Public Health) has published this fabulous report with statistics on the demographics of applicants for all 40 accredited SPH schools. I highly recommend this piece as most schools do not readily provide these statistics on their websites. This, in combination with rankings, will paint a more accurate portrayal of some of these programs and also help you write a better statement for the admissions process. You can get the report by clicking this link: http://www.asph.org/document.cfm?page=749

For example, despite the fact that Yale SPH is not one of the top 5 programs according to most private rankings (e.g. US News & World Report http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-public-health-schools/rankings), it manages to have one of the lowest acceptance percentages (33.0%). I didn't know that before I applied, and for those of you who are looking for "safety schools"  based on ranking, this would be an important reminder that ranking does not equal acceptance percentage. Now of course this isn't the end all formula, but again, a good resource.

I just wanted to add that while rankings and stats are useful aids when you are applying,  your ultimate decision should rest on whether the program fits you. Your personal statement will be exponentially better if you take the time to understand and appreciate the specialties of the school you're applying to.
