As soon as you think about doing research with human subjects, you need to explore or begin to get IRB approval for your work.
What is an IRB?
According to Northwestern's IRB office, "An IRB is an institutional review board, established to review proposed human subject research. The IRB may approve, require modifications (to secure approval), or disapprove research. At Northwestern University (NU), all human subject research (regardless of funding) must be reviewed and approved by an IRB before initiation."
